With so many of you enjoying our online classes and video library, we thought we’d put together a short guide on alternatives to common props.
If traditional yoga props are not within reach, there are some useful hacks that can help you sustain your practice away from the context of a studio. Remember, we also sell mats, belts, balls and resistance bands at Yogahome so get in touch if you want to purchase any equipment.
BRICKS + BLOCKS: These provide support during standing, balancing and seated postures. Books are fantastic yoga prop substitutes! Chunkier books will make a great alternative for bricks. Just make sure that if you are using two, they are roughly the same size. Foam blocks are typically used to sit on to prop yourself up or get more of an anterior tilt in your pelvis. You can replace these with flatter books, or with a folded up towel or blanket.
STRAPS: are wonderful props for extending and lengthening your reach. A dressing gown or bathrobe belt is the perfect substitution for a strap, but you could also use a scarf or tie.
BOLSTER: Are popular yoga props, used to provide comfort, support poses and increase stretching during the most restorative postures. You can replace a bolster by wrapping two bed pillows tightly in a towel or blanket.
EYE PILLOW: Used to enhance rest during relaxation poses and meditation. Scarves work well as an alternative for eye pillows.
