Backbends can be some of the most rewarding postures in yoga, because they invite a sense of spaciousness to the whole body. They lengthen and open the front of the body, strengthen the spine and help improve our posture. The problem for many yogis is that backbends are not practiced accurately, which leads to pain, injury and students opting out of them full of misunderstanding.
